DANNEMORA, N.Y. (WCAX) - New York’s state inspector general is reflecting on the 10th anniversary of the escape at Dannemora.

Inspector General Lucy Lang moderated a discussion with former top state corrections officials and police, brought back together for the first time since the infamous escape at the Clinton Correctional Facility back in 2015.

On June 6, 2015, inmates David Sweat and Richard Matt, both convicted murderers serving life sentences, cut their way out of their cell at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, kicking off a three-week manhunt that made history.

The group talked on Wednesday in depth about the terrifying manhunt, the far-reaching investigation and the lasting impact the escape had on prison administration and oversight.

“It is an institution that prided itself on being a facility where some of the worst incarcerated individuals were sent. History-wise, people like Lucky Luciano, David Berkowitz, the Son of Sam... [I] was stunned when this event happened. It’s located in the northern region of the state, close to the Canadian border, gained the nickname of Little Siberia because it was so cold in the North Country,” said Anthony Annucci, the former commissioner of the N.Y. Department of Corrections and Community Supervision.
