New York State Inspector General Lucy Lang has announced the creation of the Office of the Inspector General’s inaugural Youth Advisory Council.
The statewide virtual program will bring together eighth-grade students from across New York to learn about government oversight, public service and civic engagement.
The six-session program will take place on select Wednesdays in October and November. Each session will focus on a central question and include presentations from Inspector General’s Office staff, group discussions, and interactive activities.
The program will conclude with student presentations focused on ideas for improving New York State government.
The Youth Advisory Council is open to eighth-grade students attending school in New York State who have completed, or are currently enrolled in, a U.S. history or government course. Applications open Saturday and will be accepted on a rolling basis through September 18.

Lang says the initiative is intended to make government oversight more accessible to young New Yorkers, expand civics education, and give students an opportunity to contribute their perspectives to the state’s public integrity efforts.
