New York’s top inspector says bots are teeing off on fairness at one of the state’s most iconic golf courses — and she’s calling for reforms to protect access for everyday players.
In a new report released Thursday, Inspector General Lucy Lang said automated booking software is threatening public access to Bethpage Black, the famed Long Island course known as “The People’s Country Club.” The investigation found that bots have been snapping up tee times in seconds, shutting out real users and undermining public trust.
“Bethpage Black is a shared treasure — open to all by design,” Lang said. “When bots beat out real New Yorkers for tee times, the spirit of communal access is lost.”
Although there’s no confirmed evidence of reselling, the report urged the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP) to keep tightening its system. Several changes are already in place, including:
- A non-refundable $5 booking fee
- Two-factor authentication for user accounts
- Limits on reservations and excessive cancellations
- Controls on duplicate accounts
- Staggered re-releases of canceled tee times to block bot exploitation
The changes come as Bethpage Black reopens its online reservation system following the 2025 Ryder Cup.
OPRHP Acting Commissioner Kathy Moser said the agency is committed to fair, affordable access across all 23 state-run golf courses and will continue improving its systems.
Inspector General Lang also recommended a broader review of reservation practices statewide to ensure public golf truly remains for the public.
